subject: File server vs Application Server

What is the difference between an application server and a file server ?
If am on a computer on a network and call up and use a word processor am
I using a file server or an application server ?
I want to set up a 3 station network. One station is for my wife who does
mostly word processing , home budget, email and ocassional WEB use.
The second is for me. Heavy WEB, BBS, playing with OSes (Win95,NT,LINUX etc),
no computer games, ocassional word processing .
The third is for the kids and guests. Heavy computer games, and some word
processing.
I have NT 4.0 server and work station.
Is it not already a file server ? Or is it not already an application server

Or do I have to buy something more ?
