For the past five decades(yeah...that's 50 years), Californian Agricultural
Businesses have been trying to "grow rice in the desert". Tons upon tons of
water from the Bay Delta has been diverted to the Central Valley as well as
Southern California. Now the Delta habitats and fisheries are suffering,
because as you remove too much fresh water, the salty ocean water backs up
into the system.
Now a great thing happened five years ago. A law was passed which was
designed to limit the amount of water being diverted from the Bay Delta:
The Central Valley Project Improvement Act.
Great idea, right? Yes, but the problem is that the AgriCorps don't want to
get less water, and they scared the Department of the Interior into sitting
on this law, and not enforcing it. In order to make sure that the delta
habitats and fisheries get on their feet, we need to make sure that they do
their jobs: saying "NO" to the diversion of water. To do this, we need you
to write to the Department of the Interior, and demand that they enforce
this law, so that we have a healthy eco-system for our posterity.
