Are you properly handling the CD drive?
In Max.ctl, your line needs to look like this:
% The following command tells Maximus to save the directories
% of drives C: through Z:. WARNING: If you have floppy
% drives which use drive designations other than A: or B:,
% make sure to edit the following statement! Also ensure that
% you remove any references to CD-ROM drives.
        %
% NOTE! OS/2 automatically saves and restores all
% drives, so this keyword is ignored when using OS/2.
        Save Directories CDEFMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Note that all references to CD drives (6 of them on my system) have
been removed. Not removing them caused Max to lock up and otherwise
behave badly as it tried to "close" things on a non-writable disk.
Open Max.ctl and search for the word "drives" and you'll be taken
 right to the segment above.
If that doesn't fix it... something else is not working! (duh!) :)
