Braves Rock Astros 7-1, Tie Series at 1 (AP)

AP - The rookie rocked the Rocket, John Smoltz picked up where he left
off six years ago, and the Atlanta Braves find themselves all even with
the Houston Astros in the NL playoffs. Brian McCann hit a three-run
homer in his first postseason at-bat off Roger Clemens, which were all
the runs Smoltz needed to lead the Braves past Houston 7-1 on Thursday
night, tying the best-of-five series at one game apiece.

Cardinals Beat Padres 6-2 for 2-0 Edge (AP)

AP - So much for the late-season struggles by St. Louis Cardinals
pitchers. Mark Mulder carried a shutout into the seventh inning
Thursday and shook off a liner to his left biceps that left him doubled
over in pain to put his team on the brink of a first-round playoff
sweep. The Cardinals again built an early lead in a 6-2 victory over
the San Diego Padres that gave them a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five
 NL division series.

Gretzky's Lineup Mistake Costs Coyotes (AP)

AP - Wayne Gretzky found out there's more to being an NHL coach than
just signing the lineup sheet. For one, it pays to actually read the
lineup to make sure only available players are on the ice.

Leafs' Sundin to Miss Four to Six Weeks (AP)

AP - Toronto captain Mats Sundin could miss four to six weeks after
breaking the lower orbital bone when he was hit in the face by a puck
in the season opener, the Maple Leafs announced Thursday.

Montgomerie Takes AmEx Championship Lead (AP)

AP - In the cool Pacific air, Colin Montgomerie felt warmth from the
gallery as he worked his way around Harding Park in flawless fashion
and wound up atop the leaderboard in the American Express Championship.

Sportsview: Testaverde May Regret Return (AP)

AP - One picture of an old quarterback is worth a thousand words of
warning. The iconic image for today's NFL fans might well be T.O. with
his mouth in gear, but to an earlier generation, a single
black-and-white photo fixed what the game was about: Y.A. Tittle on his
knees in the shadow of the goalposts, his blue New York Giants helmet
lying on the ground a few feet away, a trickle of blood creasing his
 bald pate.

Yoga Helps Okafor Improve Flexibility (AP)

AP - No one can accuse Emeka Okafor of spending the offseason lounging
around on the couch and eating mounds of ice cream. Especially if they
caught even a fleeting glimpse of him in the Charlotte Bobcats'
 training camp.

Angels aren't anxious to see Big Unit on mound (USATODAY.com)

USATODAY.com - As the Angels try to get past the New York Yankees and
into the American League Championship Series, it is Randy Johnson once
again standing in their way. He will start Friday's Game 3 in Yankee
Stadium, 10 years after he ended one of the Angels' most painful
seasons. In Johnson's career, he is 15-6 against the Angels in 29
 starts with a 2.93 ERA.

Togo Eager to Play in World Cup Qualifier (AP)

AP - The small West African nation of Togo has soccer fever, and it's
even reached the president. Togo is looking for its first World Cup
berth, and can clinch its spot in next year's showcase event in Germany
with a win or tie in a final qualifying match at the Republic of Congo
 on Saturday.

Kings Beat Coyotes 3-2; Gretzky Winless (AP)

AP - Alexander Frolov scored the go-ahead goal on a power play in the
second period, giving the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 victory over the
Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night that kept Wayne Gretzky winless as an
 NHL coach.

Losing History Could Dog Vanderbilt (AP)

AP - The Vanderbilt Commodores face their biggest challenge in the
pursuit of their first winning record since 1982: the program's own
 miserable history of losing.

Davydenko Reaches Open De Moselle Quarters (AP)

AP - Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia beat Michael Llodra of
France 6-4, 6-4 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at the Open de
 Moselle.

Kerr Takes Lead at Longs Drugs Challenge (AP)

AP - Cristie Kerr had consecutive eagles in a career-best 9-under 62 to
take a four-stroke lead Thursday in the first round of the Longs Drugs
 Challenge.
