This may sound odd, but it's how the pet stores keep their plecos alive.  Get 
a zuccini squash.  Cut it into slices about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.  Boil them 
until cooked.  Allow them to cool, then drop a slice in the tank.  Your pleco 
will love them!  It may take a while for him to figure out that it's food, 
but eventually he will learn to rest on top of it to keep the other fish 
away. The extra slices should be stored in the refrigerator in a bowl of 
water.  They can be frozen, if necessary, but the tend to float after 
freezing, rather than sink to the bottom.
