Sounds like a cracked housing around the guage. There's
really nothing that can be done to the guage except use
it till it drops and then buy a new one.

In my opinion, YES!

If you're implying that you dive according tto the rules
of the "old school of diving"... dive till you can't breathe
anymore, then open up your reserve and surface -- I'd suggest
that you are an accident just waiting to happen.
Please consider relying on training and guages rather than
your J-valve reserve.
