| subject: | IREX 2.29 UUCP outbound problem |
I've been setting up IREX 2.29 as a UUCP email server, working with Wildcat 4. The SMTP server inbound works fine, and messages come in, are spam filtered by a program I wrote, and tossed to the email echo in Wildcat. Outbound messages are pulled from the spool directory WCGate uses, and end up in .msg format in the IREX spool. Within a short period of time, IREX tries to connect to the destination SMTP server to send the message. It appears to grab the right address from DNS. However, all the SMTP servers fail to respond. The log shows that for all the ones I've tried. Chowdanet does have a static IP and a domain name associated with it. Both chowda.com and chowdanet.com point to the system. As far as I can see, this has never been a source of spam so it shouldn't be on any RBL. The UUCP spool type is UUCICO DOS filenames. I haven't tried other choices. Could that be the problem? Beyond that, I have no guesses as to what I could try. There is a huge amount of inbound traffic, though that doesn't seem to cause errors. The log shows from 5-20 inbound SMTP connects per second (yes, second). When I used an outside UUCP host I received roughly 250,000 inbound emails per day. The spam filter culls that down to maybe a couple of dozen, and maybe 3-5 are legitimate. It's a busy server. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get the outbound email to work, I'd be grateful.
