I didn't want to make it too long.
Old animosities take a long time to die. In 1980 my first year in
Yellowknife, I agreed to billet athletes for the Arctic Winter Games
as there weren't enough hotel rooms for everyone. I ended up with 4
Inuit girls from Coppermine. I was in the Polaris apartments at the
time (you probably remember these places although nobody else here
will know what I mean) and gave them directions on how to get to Sir
John Franklin High School for the gym and to Nettie's for the
cheapest meals in town. They would walk over to 49 St, up to
Franklin Ave. and back to Nettie's to avoid walking in front of the
Gold Range Hotel. I asked them why and they responded, "Because of
the Indians. They hate us you know and they're drunk and they all
carry knives." They were genuinely scared.
Cheers
YK Jim
