RC> It's 56000, it's real, and it's done with a different protocol which
RC> is written in software - just as V.34 is.
However, Rockwell's chipsets use hardwired system, thus requiring a "chip
swap", so you will have to either popping out all the chips on the modem,
or they will take your old modem for trade in...
Also, according to USR, the Teleco limites the top speed at 53.3Kbps or
something close...
cb> mainly.. does the 56.6 upgrade activate some chip or something

RC> It's different software if you have a programmable DSP and flash ROM,
RC> it's different software on a different chip if you don't.
Well, for my USR Courier, I have to replace the software inside the modem,
first the program purge the flash memory, and then writes the new firmware
(or the operating system for Modem) into the flash memory.
Since USR wants you to either register EARLY for free upgrade or PAY about
$60 US bux for the upgrade, I have to call USR's 1800 BBS line for and
enter a password of sorts, after the BBS machine checked the stuff, it
enables my X2 function. Too bad I don't have any X2 host to call... :(
There is something to note, that NOT ALL MODEM can be upgraded!!! Even
some USR 28.8/33.6 modem isn't capable of being upgraded. Most if not
all Rockwell modems can't be software upgraded, and some Rockwell based
will need a new set of chipset and some will have to be traded in for
another modem.
And no, X2 upgrade does not just enable some hidden function, it is a whole
new function, and if you can't connect to a X2 host at X2 speed, chances
are that your modem does not have any X2 function at or, hidden or not.
