Oh, i was talking about various 3rd-party libs i never used and never
looked at.

My current philosophy is: if you don't need to do it in C++, don't do
it in C++. C++ is for high performance, and as you said, you only need
to send modem commands.
I now have trouble understanding that so many people use and learn C or
C++ and want others to do so, because most C/C++ programmers don't know
enough details of the language to really master their stuff, and even
when they do, memory allocation bugs crawl alot.
Perl is an interesting thing, IMHO, though its on-the-fly bytecode
compiler makes things quite slow on loadtime. It has very compact
syntax, and brings neat concepts such as anonymous functions, closures,
pattern matching, default variable, packages, slack OOP, in a base
system of strings, safe pointers with simple garbage collection,
arrays, dictionaries (implemented using dynamic hashtables). It is well
integrated to Unix and allow to do most anything you'd do with C, even
low-level socket routines, forking (cloning a running program), and
other magic.
It's one of my favorite languages as of now. I once loved Tcl, but Perl
is crazier.
