Hello....
My boyfriend runs two tanks, one African Cichlids, and the other is a salt
water coral filled tank (dead coral)... the Cichlids are doing wonderfully in
their 180 gallon tank (wieghs almost 2 tons when fully loaded!!!)
Now, here is the reason for my post.... Approximately one month has passed
since the salt water tank was set up, bio balls, 2 filters, salt level is
normal... every thing seeming normal... over the course of the last month the
tank has developed green algae, which I am told is normal as it has to cycle
down to bright red algae... 1) what is the approximate length of time this
process should take?? The tank is located 90 degrees to a window, on the
same corner, and the window is a bay, so the tank isn't directly in line of
sunlight, and there is a fence directly beside the window which blocks the
light coming in opposite the tank.... the light is more diffuse, but not far
from direct... the Cichlid tank is at the opposite end of the room from the
window, so is out of the light, even if the window's blinds are open..
Now... my BF brought home on Wednesday 4 damsels, 2 green and 2 blue... the
two green, after sitting in a few inches of the tank's water in a bucket for
almost an hour (perhaps more, they were there when I came in from work), and
then they were added into the tank... over the next 3 hours, the two blues
remained hidden, and one green, the other green seemed to like investigating
the tank, but was still very nervous... the next day, watching the tank, I
noticed that that green was vibrating, side swimming in the upper 3rd of the
tank, and swimming strangely... that evening I came home and he was dead, the
other had disappeared amongst the coral, and was also retrieved dead... one
blue now swims the tank, and the other has disappeared, probably also dead...
2) What could've caused this reaction, and how can it be prevented???
also... the tank hadn't fully cycled through the algae stages... it is only
now reaching the bright red coral stage, and there are so far only a few
spots of it around the tank....
Thanks for your assistance... I know the message is long, but I think it
contains what is needed for you people to maybe help...
RSVP... Marie
