Ever since it was mentioned I've been waiting for better
hints. This is superior news. Space opera does very well
in the ratings and Lensmen is the best of the genre.

I thought that at first. Then I double checked the wording.
"nearly legendary". I figure that eliminates Forbidden Planet,
The Day the Earth Stood Still, War of the Worlds, 2001.
It still leaves some superior but lesser known films.
