They're the offspring of the Gatling Gun, invented around the end of the
Civil War. With modern technology comes a modern version of it. They're
high tech and shoot lots of rounds per minute, but the basics are the same
as the original. The uniqness of the design is that it has multiple
barrels that rotate as it fires. If it has ten barrels, then each barrel
only fires 100 rounds per minute out of the thousand rounds fired.
Friction in the barrel of any other machine gun would burn it up, not to
mention that it couldn't chamber and fire that many rounds in one minute.
