That was the whole thing, IIRC. Yes, he was a serious challanger. The storyline was that Awesome stiffed the hell out of his "girlfriend" with a clothesline, and Spike dropped the gimmick to show he was going to kick Awesome's ass. It was less about the title than it was about getting a pound of flesh and hurting Awesome any way he possibly could. He knew he was going to get his ass kicked, but as long as he kicked Awesome's ass in the process, it wuld be worth it. For a recent, mini-version of this, think about how "goofy loser" Stevie Richards beat the snot out of pushed Test after Test gave Victoria a big boot. Richards and Spike both played their roles perfectly, with believable reactions, and the fans bought it as a result.
