You were lucky to find a good one at a garage sale.  The one machine that my 
DH bought me at a garage sale worked for about a year (he gave $5.00), and 
then the tension started messing up.  It seemed after that that I constantly 
put it in the shop for tension problems.  Might have been because I had a 
little boy that probably helped out with the tension problems.  There was no 
marking to indicate the correct tension, and it was very hard to keep it in 
tension correctly.
Since I have gone to the Bernina line (EXPENSIVE), I have never again had any 
problems with tension.  I love my machine and use it nearly nightly.
