I go to Middle Tenn. State Univ., The only college that has been
liscensed to teach Dolby surround sound and been given encoding and
decoding Processors by dolby them selves.  It really isn't that big an
ordeal from what I understand. (haven't actually had the class yet!)
The dolby encoder has 4 inputs on it for left, right surround and
center.  You mix to four, it spits it out in two tracks for vcr tapes
or what ever.  It basically does all the work.  You do haveto watch
phase manipulation. 
Not that much to it really.
