I want to thank all of you that responded to my question. All were helpful.
I did have a copy of the MC-50 mic. I just could not seem to put out a
readable signal. After tuning the rig on a can and then adjusting my
antenna tuner - Lo and Behold - I  signed on to a net and got good reports
on strength and quality. I did the same thing earlier and got nothing.
I do not know what I did differently but I am now on the air with good 
results
on 20 and 40.
Your comments and advice re the MC-50  and the plug were enough to
encourage me to keep trying. Thanks again
One last thing- Is the 40 meter Drake Technical Net still active
on Sundays at 3 PM EST on 7.238 mhz ??
It's sure good to see that after the 20 years I was off the air, hams are
still as friendly and helpful as they were back then.
