Well, you didn't gave us much to go on, but...
wasn't in all those books you read not a single example or program source,
that had you itching to add some more functionality, or even expand to meet
some of your needs?
I read in an answer you gave to someones else reply you would like to write
games, but be aware that if you're talking graphics and such this is probably
one of the more difficult area's to conquer.
IHMO you should start of with rather simple utilities, that you can use when
busy with your computer. That way you also get a frontline seat as things
don't behave as you thought. Don't think, oh well, someone wrote that utility
already so why bother, write your own, and find out what a user needs and
suspects. Reinventing the wheel in this case isn't bad.
You didn't tell what OS you've in mind or using, but presuming Dos, you could
start with a filefind utility to lokate certain files on your HD, or a print
utility that can print your homegrown sources nicely formatted to a printer,
or, if you really, really want games, try a simple textmode adventure or
Conway's game of life.
Hope I gave you some ideas... ;-))
Greetings from sunny Amsterdam,
       Jan
