Exactly.

An actual open atheist would stand a snowball's chance in a blast furnace's
chance of being elected to aything. Even dog catcher.

If someone like this guy I knew decades ago who even as an adult fervently
believed in Santa Claus, ran for office he'd be laughed off the stage.

But somebody says they believe in people doing magic tricks in the name of
"The Lord" and they make it all the way to the presidency.

Although not all fervent believers get elected.
Voters have rejected religious nutcases like Sarah Palin and Alan Keyes.
