No strawman attempt, nor misreading. You didn't read it correctly
if that's what you got. I'll tell you why:
He (Ward) didn't say "his bad handling of the pandemic". What
he did say was that he didn't see Trump being (re)elected as a
result of this pandemic *AND* his bad handling of it. That's two
separate things that he referred to. Obviously the second one
(the handling of it) is something that some folks think Trump
should have done better with. What's not quite so obvious is the
*inferred* fault being put on Trump for the pandemic itself. It's
right there in what was said, pretty straightforward English.

Sure, I'm positive that people have issues with how Trump has
handled the response. No doubt about that. The actual question
though is "should they" (have issues)? What's unclear to me is
what folks think should have been done differently. As a matter
of fact, Trump was *soundly* criticized for cutting travel to/from
China, and then Europe, as early as he did. Remember? Lots of
people said that was an over-reaction. So which is it? It's a
case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't".
If he had acted even more quickly or aggessively, do you doubt
that the Left would have started screaming that he was over
stepping his authority and trying to be "a dictator"?

Yep, no argument there, a poor word choice on my part.
Personally, my belief is that if there is blame to be placed on
the handling of things, first look at the Governors of states.
