The "Air Host" Hotel in Chicago was the spot many of the AWA wrestlers
stayed in the 1970's when Chi-Town was a major stop on the circuit.
This was not exactly the MGM Grand. Bobby Heenan once said to Gorilla
Monsoon, "did you ever stay at the Air Host? The place had hot and
cold running rats." He was being kind.

One evening back in about '75, our contingent of Minnesota marks had
ventured to Chicago to take in an AWA card, and we were partying after
the matches at the Air Host. It's funny what sticks in your mind some
27 years later.

There was a billiards table set up in one of the rooms adjacent to the
bar area. The illustrious "Big, Bad" Bobby Duncum, then one of the
mainstays in the AWA, was in the process of putting the 8-ball in the
side pocket while simultaneously stuffing a wad of chew in his jaw and
drinking a Budweiser. As was the custom at the Air Host, (or the
Downtowner in Milwaukee, or the Dyckman in Minneapolis, etc., etc.,)
there were several groupies (also known of course as "ring rats") in
proximity, eagerly offering to spend time with the "boys."

Duncum set his bottle of Bud on a table and was chalking up his cue
when a rather buxom young lass cooed, "Bobby, would you mind if I took
a sip of your beer?" Duncum looked across the room at Larry Hennig,
winked, and told the woman, "sure, baby." With that, she took a swig
off the bottle. Within seconds, her face contorted and she choked, "oh
s**t!!" Duncum had spit a substantial amount of chew into the bottle.

As our group finished laughing hysterically and made our way into the
lobby, another scene was playing itself out. A traveler was standing
by the front desk waiting to check in, but there was no Air Host
employee behind the counter. The guy was getting rather impatient,
when out of the bar area came Bobby Heenan. Bobby said to the guy,
"yes, sir! Can I help you?" When the man replied that he wanted to
check in for the night, Bobby handed him the guest register, had him
sign his name, grabbed a room key off the wall and gave it to the guy,
who happily took the key and proceeded to make his way to the room!

Within seconds, the front desk clerk came out from the back and asked
Bobby if there had been a problem. As he was sauntering back to the
bar, Heenan nodded. "Major problem. Big commotion in room 214. Cops
are there. Some guy is having an affair with Roy Rogers' horse!!"

Oh, to be back at the home of the "rats."
