What I find usefull is wrt usb2 disks is the ability to "boot from
USB" as then you can image to a USB drive (fairly frequently if you
set up s/w raid to include the usb disk in a mirror) & then if stuff
goes horribly wrong & you need instant relief you can reboot, select
the boot from USB et voila you're back in the game. You can then......(if
you wish) attach a 2'nd usb2 hdd & start the whle process over till
you've scheduled downtime to delve nto the innards & do the ide thang.

I have used machines which for security are purely USB2 & they work
just as well as IDE based ones.
