Agreed. Without getting into too much technical speak, the R-4C lends
itself to becoming a top-notch "competition grade" receiver. With
the proper roofing filter and the mixer mods, etc., this rig will hear
stuff that many modern rigs won't. The dynamic range is even up there with
the Yaesu FT-1000 series.
A couple weeks ago, a completely "hot-rod" R-4C went for $1075.
The cost of the mods was advertised as being over $800.

My guess: Any R4C selling at that price has all the Sherwood mods.
That is, it's a modified receiver and can be expected to perform
better than an original R4C and is in perfect condition today. These
receivers command a premium. I saw one sell for just under a grand
a few weeks ago on eBay.
It's not so much that the R4C is a lot better than the B, but that these
mods only apply to the C receiver, and that the receiver has recently
been tuned by an expert. I'm not seeing these prices on garden variety
R4C's.
