IT'S ABOUT TIME !! WINRADIO IS HERE - OH YES !
Rosetta Laboratories of Victoria, Australia (of all places!) throws their hat
into the ring of olympic scanning with WINRADIO, the first all-band
receiver-scanner on a PC card for the hobbyist!
Television on a PC-card has been old-hat for a couple of years now, but
WinRadio is the first serious PC receiver I've seen, and is it ever hot
uff!
And just in the nick of time, too, I might add. WinRadio offers a whole new
approach to scanning and monitoring that promises to lend a real infusion of
life to the wallowing, floundering hobby radio scene. And does it ever do it
in style, too! WinRadio is cool. But enough of the blubbering and slobbering
for a minute. Let's get down and dirty and see what WinRadio is really all
about.
WinRadio is a world-caliber radio on a standard AT card that plugs into an
expansion slot on an IBM-PC/compatible computer with 386 or higher processor.
Operating system requirements are MS-DOS 3.3 or higher or Windows 3.1 or
higher, including Windows 95.
A minimum of 640-k RAM is required for DOS, but 4-Mb is minimum for any
Windows environment. Your computer must have a vacant 16-bit slot and you
have to supply your own plug-in speaker or headphones. This completes the
mandatory requirements.
Now let's talk specs in plain English. WinRadio covers 500 kHZ to 1300 Mhz
continuously except in some countries where certain bands may be omitted in
order to comply with government regs. For the USA, that means the cellular
bands are not available. At this writing, I don't know if a cellular hack is
possible, but I will try to find out.
Tuning Steps are user selectable from 1 kHz to 1 MHz, and a BFO is provided
to enhance tuning of SSB or CW signals in +/-5 Hz increments.
Four modes are available: AM, NFM, WFM, and SSB/CW
