subject: dowload protocols

I've sat here and watched some users get totally lost when it comes to
selecting a download protocol. I've also noticed that some will answer the
question time after time at different downloads even though I've copied the
"set default protocol" menu option from the offline reader menu to the files
section menu...
What I'd like is to be able to implement some way to suggest to a user that,
if they don't have a default protocol set, that they might want to do so and
get it over with.
It'd also be nifty if there was some way to suggest to people that zmodem
might be a good choice if their end supports it. I sat here the other night
and watched some guy select xmodem, and nothing happened (because he wasn't
doing anything at his end), and then ymodem on a subsequent call, only
because those were the first two choices on the list.
Any ideas as to how to make some of this easier for folks?
