There's a product called "Ropel" (I think), that turns all kinds of critters 
away, including dogs.  The only problem is that I believe it is intended for 
outdoor use only, as on plants and shrubs.  If you're desperate enough to use 
it indoors, I'd recommend that you test it on a hidden portion of the area 
you're trying to protect for residual staining before spraying it all over 
your favorite sofa.
