subject: Pro-43 full coverage

GG> I was wondering if the Pro-43 can be modified to receive the
 GG> following freqs...
 GG> Under 30 Mhz. 54 - 118 Mhz. 174 - 220 Mhz. 512 - 800 Mhz.
SC>Sure. All you need to do is build RF sections for each of
SC>those frequency ranges, create detectors for SSB, AM, TV FM
SC>audio and WFM audio as used on the FM band and modify the
SC>PLL frequency synthesizer that forms the first local
SC>oscillator.
I wish you'd told me that before I modified my '43 for
500 KHz to 1GHz coverage. BTW, the '43 already handles AM,
and I always thought TV audio was WFM...
Why would the PLL be a problem?
It does 640 to 1610 MHz right out of the box.
Dropping it to 610 is no problem.
SC>If you do know what that means you will realize that it is a
SC>tremendously difficult job that requires an experienced RF
SC>technician to accomplish.
Gee, I never considered myself one...
SC>It would also result in a scanner the size of the old
SC>"general coverage" shortwave receivers from the '50s.
SC>
Hm. I haven't noticed the scanner putting on any pounds!
SC>Frankly, it would be much less expensive to buy a
SC>scanner/receiver that is built to cover all of those ranges.
No, it's much cheaper to take one of the best handhelds
ever made, and unlock its full potential.
