I am sure there was, but I did not tried it myself.

Many centuries ago there was no phone signal at all,
and they did also arrive where they wanted ;-).
As a hard of hearing, I do not use a phone.
For me it is only Half Duplex communicating,
i.e. only outgoing, not incomming.
