In my case, it's the transmission of a family name through generations.
Blair is my dad's middle name and his mother's maiden name. It's a
typical method of keeping a female line's name "alive" within a family.
I haven't done a lot of research on this topic, so I don't know what
you're supposed to do with it after the 3rd generation (do you start
generations Juniors, or just let it go?).

If you run across someone with a first name that's typically a last name
(Parker, Cooper, etc), it's probably a family name that's been preserved
in this manner. I've heard that this is more prevalent among Scots, but
that could just be one of those things they bruit about at Highland
Games to make everyone feel special (not that we need any encouragement).

Blair (and I'm 51; but not really relevant in this case--it's not as if
I were a 20-something female whose parents watched "Facts of Life").
