Yes, basically - for 10BaseT and 100BaseTX - there are other 100Base 
protocols which are slightly different.
There are switching hubs (expensive - several thousands of US dollars I 
believe) which don't have this behaviour.

I don't know the likely price in your area, but in the UK you can get the 
smaller hubs for less than 40ukp.
Cables - depends what you want....patch cords? Varies. Just make sure you get 
Cat5 for upwards compatability.
