I tend to think of them as affordable professional recording equipment.  The 
ADAT and DA-88 revolutionized the digital recording industry.  You no longer 
need to pay $100,000 for 24-tracks of professional digital audio.  The audio 
specs are almost identical, so don't let the price fool you.
