I've gotten into the habit of staggering out of bed first thing in the 
morning and going to the computer to read echomail to wake myself up.  (If 
this message doesn't make sense, forgive me, I'm writing it in my sleep.)  
When I read the above paragraph, I understood it to mean you were sitting in 
the shade watching the horses talk to THEIR friends and drink THEIR sodas, 
not you sitting in the shade drinking your soda.  ;-)
 
It reminded me of a schooling show I once went to, where my friend insisted 
that I and her other guest come wait with her in the 'backstage' area where 
the riders and horses were standing and waiting their turn. 
 I didn't want to because I didn't belong there and figured I would 
be in the way.  Plus, I was drinking a soda and one of the horses decided he 
was really interested in that sweet-smelling thing I had in my hand.  That's 
how I found out that horses like Sprite.  :-)
 
It shouldn't have surprised me, I know.  In one of my horse books I read as a 
kid, there was a horse that loved pineapple, and in one of the Dick Francis 
mysteries, there's a stallion that likes anchovies. 
 If horses will eat anchovies, then anything is possible.
