You put it into words extremely well!
I see a distinct correlation between young folks' attitude and the kinds
of entertainment they're involved in, particularly the kinds of music
they listen to and the way they dress. The pounding, ear splitting,
repetitive beat coupled with the anti-authority, morbid styled lyrics of
so-called "rap" and hard rock music HAS to have a negative effect on
young minds. Sloppy, ill fitting clothes, hair styles, and outlandish
body jewelry are (IMO) outward signs that the individual is trying to
adapt the ideals (or lack thereof) that these media represent.
The next sign of degenerating attitude is disrespect for parents,
teachers, and other authority figures. The decline to complete lack of
respect for life is a natural process when these attitudes are allowed
to continue unchecked.
Herein we have a definite problem... how to governor the input of such
trash to their minds without creating a rebellion that is
counter-productive.
When my son wanted to migrate to wild styles I had a talk with him about
what _I_ thought those things represented. Of course he disagreed .
So, I made a deal with him. I'd allow the sloppy clothes and hair
styles (we didn't get into nipple rings) until I noted a change in his
_behaviour_. The choice of how to dress was his, but the judgement of
behavioral patterns was _mine_. He found that to dress that way and
not act that way was virtually impossible. Fortunately he realized that
a person's _appearance_ reflects the person and quickly decided that
he'd rather not be perceived as a degenerate. We both won.
