| subject: | Amazing Susan Boyle |
It was a month ago today -- April 26th -- that I first became familiar with the amazing Scottish woman, Susan Boyle -- a contestant on the "Britain's Got Talent" TV show -- by way of a message posted on our Armageddon BBS. For those of you who aren't aware of it, "Britain's Got Talent" is the British version of the American TV show "American Idol", which I have never watched. I am simply not into the flashy, worldly shows which promise to make people rich and famous, and I detest Hollywood gossip and its liberal attitudes. At any rate, after reading some comments on our Armageddon BBS, I got curious and decided to download a high quality video of Susan Boyle's "Britain's Got Talent" performance from the YouTube website. In a word, Susan Boyle's performance of "I Dreamed A Dream" from "Les Miserables" made me quite emotional and brought a tear to my eyes. I was truly touched by her heart-felt performance. If you have seen pictures or videos of this woman, then you will already know that from the moment that Ms. Boyle walked out on that stage, the deck was stacked against her. You could see it in everyone's faces -- both the judges' faces, as well as the audience's faces -- as their eyes rolled in disbelief at the thought that this woman might possibly have some talent. But then, after fumbling a little bit with her words during her introduction, Susan opened her mouth to sing, and the fact that she is 48 years old, unemployed, and looks like she works on a pig farm and doesn't have a single singing bone in her body, just vanished. Everyone was mesmerized by her powerful singing, including the skeptics, and they gave her a standing ovation. Even the toughest judge, Simon Cowell, was forced to recognize this woman's talent. It was truly amazing. What a powerful moment of vindication for that dear woman from Scotland! She beat the odds! I was reminded of the fact that big surprises often come in unusual packages -- even human "packages" -- after all, the Bible informs us that this is even the way that God often seems to work. As His Word tells us: "For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence." 1 Corinthians 1:26-29, KJV Well, on Monday, May 25th, Susan returned to "Britain's Got Talent" TV show in her attempt to move up to the finals. But by this time, a lot had changed for this dear woman from a humble background. Her story is now world-famous, her videos have been viewed on YouTube over 200,000,000 million times, and millions of people literally all around the world have been rooting for her and sending her words of love and encouragement. This time Susan chose to sing "Memory" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous Broadway musical "Cats". While she started out weak the first few seconds, she quickly picked up, and once again gave an outstanding, moving performance. By the time she was done, the audience -- as well as all three judges -- gave her a standing ovation. In fact, hard-nosed Simon Cowell was so taken by her performance that he offered her an apology by saying: ----- Begin Quote ----- "You are one special lady, I have to say, you really are. You know what, I just want to apologize because of the way we treated you before you sang the first time. You made me and everyone else look very stupid and I'm very happy for you, very proud of you." ----- End Quote ----- In an earlier interview, Simon Cowell had also stated "We're all guilty on the panel of judging [Boyle] before she sang. We were completely and utterly wrong. It's terribly embarrassing." I was just reading online that after all of the call-in votes were tallied at the end of the May 25th show, Susan did in fact move into the final round of "Britain's Got Talent". It seems that it is my nature to side with the underdog in most situations; and I have to say that I truly wish Susan the best. I suppose I get a little vicarious satisfaction out of seeing someone beat the odds, and figuratively stick their nose up at the rich and powerful of the world. I just hope that this sudden attention and popularity doesn't change Ms. Boyle in a negative way, as often happens with people who find themselves in such situations. I encourage you to visit the YouTube website and view or download Susan's performance of "I Dreamed A Dream" and "Memory". See if you are not also touched by this dear woman.
