The 'top horse' also seems to vary on the fitness of the others. One
of ours, Tokki, is top of the heap most of the time, but if she's feeling
under the weather she can't be doing with bossing the others about enough,
and she ends up right at the bottom of the heirachy.

You cut them that young? In the UK most are cut at around 6 months - year,
they develop better, though you do get some that go bolshie.

JP> "strutting about and rounding them up" ... it IS funny to watch. These

Interesting sight today. I let three of our biggish mares out (around 14-15h)
one 17h TB gelding and a purebred shetland out into our biggest field.
They pottered off to the other end (about half a mile). When i'd done
the mucking out I decided to put some hay out as the grass is mostly
mud (the rain we've had in the past month is astounding!).
Went out into the field and spread it around, then gave them a shout.
Five heads shot up, Basil (The Shettie) started off first, then all
four galloping along behind him. Perfect formation - four abreast
and this little thing out front with his legs going like mad!
Awe-inspiring sight - galloping flat out, mud and water spraying
everywhere, tails high, ears forward. Was so fascinated I didn't
realise I was in their way...
Simon (A bit muddy)
... She'll be all right. Inform Lord Prophet we have a prisoner.
