think of anyone I would want in charge.

But they don't.  They THINK they do.  Most Westerners are ignorant of how the
rest of the world works and thinks.  People in the major cities don't even
relate to people who live in rural areas only a couple of hundred kilometers
away.

We fight for resources and dominance.  At the moment, the USA and China are
heading towards war, because China wants to be the dominant power.  Good luck
convincing China that it is not their turn to dominate, that they should play
nice and share.  China isn't going to go for that, not on your life.  Do you
think they aren't playing us?

What for?  How does it follow that me thinking that some African nation has the
right to self-determination and self-governance, and the right to maintain
their culture and uniqueness, necessitates me wiping them out?

It makes no sense.  People who believe that nations have the right to continue
aren't the ones who want to wipe them out.
