subject: Dopefish Patch for ROTT

Hello All.
Here's the readme for the Dopefish patch for ROTT I released last week.
Dopefish Patch for Rise of the Triad README
by Joe Siegler - Feb 24, 1998
==============================================================================
Intro:
------
I was reading Kevin Bowen's Rise of the Triad articles over on
classicgaming.com, and I got to thinking about Rise of the Triad. It's been
quite some time since anything was released for Rise of the Triad, and quite
frankly, I don't think we'll ever see anything new along these lines again.
All of the development team has long since gone on to other pastures, and
there's only a handful of us left here at Apogee who worked on the game
(excluding Scott & George), but I'm really the only one left who would have
any
interest at all anyway in doing anything new.
Anyway, right after reading these articles, I got sent a piece of Email from
someone in Philadelphia today asking if there was a place to play ROTT on the
Net (there isn't, at least not a centralized place, anyway), and I thought
that
it's about time for me to do something with ROTT. What to do? Well, I can't
do anything official, as the company will not release anything, so it's up to
me alone. :) Seriously, the only thing left short of doing more levels
ould
be the long ignored "Dopefish Patch".
What's that? Well, after Rise of the Triad v1.3 was completed, Mark
Dochtermann was sitting around looking at the unused graphics in the
darkwar.wad file, and he noticed that Chuck Jones' rendered Dopefish graphics
were still in there. I don't remember whether Mark or myself came up with
this
idea, but the idea was to replace the Triads in the multiplayer games such as
Deluder, Eluder, etc with Dopefish. That's what this patch is. It replaces
the Triads in the game with rendered Dopefish. That's about all it does. In
the version you don't have, Mark also had the Dopefish "burp" (yes, with my
burp sounds) too, and as the number of fish exponentially increased, all you
could hear was non stop burping. All the time. On the Corpseyard level, the
entire area filled up with Dopefish eventually, crashing the game. Needless
to
say, this code was removed, and I believe there is a set limit to the number
of
Dopefish that turn up (and they don't burp anymore, either).
Totally self-serving remark: Speaking of my burps in games, I was told by
John Romero that when Quake was in beta, the Dopefish that was in there would
burp (with my burp sounds) if you shot it, but that got removed in the name
f
"streamlining". Bummer. :(
This is a gag, this is not an official Apogee release by any stretch of the
imagination, so if this barfs your copy of the game, you have been warned! I
have checked it on my system, so I know it works, but if you have problems,
o
not contact us about it, we won't answer questions.
HOW TO APPLY THE PATCH:
-----------------------
THIS PATCH ONLY WORKS ON THE 1.3 CD version of ROTT. It will also work on a
1.3 Floppy Disk version of the game that has been upgraded with the 1.3 Power
Pack addon. IT WILL NOT WORK on any revisions lower than v1.3, or ANY
versions
of the Site License CD or ANY shareware episode. The reason for this is
hat
this was done on the 1.3 CD codebase, and we don't have the code or the
ability
anymore to produce other patches. This is it.
To use the patch:
1) Copy all three files from the archive into your ROTT game directory.
2) Enter "PATCH"
3) When prompted, enter dfrottcd.rtp.
4) The patch program will go off and do it's thing.
If successful, you'll get told as much. Please note that when you run the
game
after having applied this patch, you WILL get an error about the game data
file
being modified. This is what is supposed to happen with this patch.
If the patch fails, then either:
1) You don't have the correct version of ROTT installed.
2) Some data file is modified.
You should then reinstall your original 1.3 CD rom, and then reattempt this
patch.
Again, this is strictly a gag, and all it will do is add Dopefish to some of
the Multiplayer games.
In addition, I decided to have the patch add a few of of the other ROTT level
packs:
1) The Reject Level Pack (21 levels)
2) The Wolfenstein 3D level by myself (1 level)
3) The Ohio RTC Level Pack by Tom Hall & myself (4 levels)
This is probably the final release in any way for anything related to ROTT
from
us, unless either I decide to make more levels myself (probably not), so
enjoy!

You are URGED to read these two articles, they're an utterly fantastic source
of information on Rise of the Triad. In fact, I consider them required
reading for anyone who has ever liked Rise of the Triad.
