The jendays, Rio & Paco, went back to nest when their most recent baby,
Princess was 6 weeks old. Rio is sitting on four eggs so far, and the
first TWO are fertile! This is a 100% increase over the last 4 clutches,
which only had one fertile egg apiece. It will be SO neat to have two
jendays to raise together--I love to watch sibling babies play!
Before Rio was due to lay egg #2, I had checked the box every other day.
When it appeared, I noticed that #1 was gone. A search found it buried
in the shavings, and cool. I think she hid it while she went out and
"spent time" with Paco.
I wish I'd been able to get the first two eggs out of there and
temporarily under my "incubator cockatiels" as I'd planned. Maybe more
of the eggs from this clutch would be fertile. But the tiels didn't want
to sit on Rio's old clear eggs at first, and they didn't sit tightly
enough on them to make me feel comfortable about putting "live" eggs in
there. NOW the tiels are defending those clear eggs like they own
them...now that Rio's clutch is all laid. Figures...
AND, the cherry-heads are "pregnant". I moved their cage from one wall
of their bird room to another wall. 3 weeks later, I can see that
Cherry's tummy is hugely swollen (she always shows for about a week
before she lays the first egg of a clutch). And George is trying to kill
my hand whenever I change their dishes, which is a sure sign that Cherry
is going to lay. So we'll have baby cherries within a couple weeks of
the hatching of the second clutch of jendays.
AND, some of my "incubator tiels" began laying eggs of their own today!
It's too soon to tell if they're going to be fertile, but it sure looks
like I'll be busy come early September!
