Turin Gets Its First Positive Doping Test (AP)
AP - Russian biathlete Olga Pyleva was suspended Thursday for failing a
doping test, becoming the first athlete to test positive at the Turin
Games. Pyleva, who won silver at the 15km event Monday, was scratched
from the field just before the start of the 7.5km sprint, in which she
was considered a leading medal contender.
Four Americans Advance in Snowboardcross (AP)
AP - Get the office pools ready. The brackets have been set for Olympic
men's snowboardcross. The sport combining elements of NASCAR, roller
derby and -- yes -- even a touch of March Madness made its Olympic
debut Thursday during two rounds of qualifying heats.
37-Year-Old Sammy Sosa Likely to Retire (AP)
AP - Sammy Sosa probably will retire after rejecting an offer from the
Washington Nationals. "It's more than likely we have seen him in a
uniform for the last time," Sosa's agent, Adam Katz, said Wednesday.
Americans Play Down to Low Expectations (AP)
AP - Maybe those low expectations for the U.S. hockey team were fair,
after all. The Americans skated to a disappointing 3-3 tie against
lowly Latvia on Wednesday night, after brushing aside predictions in
recent days that had them finishing in the bottom half of the Olympic
standings.
Sutton Admits Drinking Before Accident (AP)
AP - Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton acknowledged Wednesday
that he drank alcohol before an automobile accident that put him in the
hospital and cast doubt about his coaching future.
Jim Haslett Happy to Be Back in NFL (AP)
AP - One frustrating day as a television analyst convinced Jim Haslett
he wanted another NFL coaching job, even as an assistant. Haslett was
hired as St. Louis' defensive coordinator by new Rams coach Scott
Linehan about three weeks after he got fired by the New Orleans Saints.
During the brief interlude, Haslett took a stab at TV work during Super
Bowl week, but was dismayed that it took 5 1/2 hours on the set to
finish a 1-hour show for FoxSports.
Pistons Trade Darko Milicic to Magic (AP)
AP - The Detroit Pistons cut their losses after taking a chance on
underachieving Darko Milicic. The No. 2 pick in the 2003 draft was
traded to the Orlando Magic along with Carlos Arroyo for a first-round
selection and center Kelvin Cato on Wednesday.
Pitchers and Catchers Report to Camp (AP)
AP - It's time for the words baseball fans couldn't wait to hear:
pitchers and catchers. Just 112 days after the Chicago White Sox
completed their World Series sweep of the Houston Astros, spring
training began Wednesday when pitchers and catchers reported to a
half-dozen of the 30 major league training camps in Florida and
Arizona.
South Korea Defeats Mexico 1-0 (AP)
AP - Lee Dong-Gook scored in the first half and Lee Woon-Jae made a
crucial save late in the game to give South Korea a 1-0 victory over
Mexico in an exhibition matchup Wednesday night.
Moore Files Another Suit Against Bertuzzi (AP)
AP - Former NHL player Steve Moore filed another lawsuit against Todd
Bertuzzi for the on-ice attack by the Vancouver Canucks forward nearly
two years ago.
Hansbrough Sets Smith Center Scoring Mark (AP)
AP - The names of those who have played in the Smith Center, informally
known as the Dean Dome, is quite a list. From those stars who have
played home games there for North Carolina during the last 20 years, to
the many visiting All-Americans, no one had ever scored 40 points in
the building named for college basketball's winningest coach. Until
Wednesday night.
McEnroe Makes Triumphant Return to ATP (AP)
AP - John McEnroe's hair is grayer, his temper tamer and his opponents
more powerful than they were when he dominated tennis more than two
decades ago. But one of the game's greatest doubles players showed he
still has some of the skills that helped him win so many tournaments
when he made a triumphant return to the ATP Tour.
Ernie Els Makes PGA Tour Debut at Riviera (AP)
AP - Ernie Els felt as though he was on foreign territory, and in some
respects he was. With the sun dipping below the mansions atop the
fairways at Riviera Country Club, he hammered a driver and leaned
slightly to the left, guiding the ball away from a bunker and down the
15th fairway Wednesday during his pro-am round.
