Sadly, it's an all too common situation. I see it all over these days. People
like this are driving people _away_ because they come off as rabid kooks. If
they held off on the name-calling and reasoned quietly they might get
somewhere but instead they yammer off like the religeous fanatic screaming at
everyone that they're going to burn in hell unless they get down on their
knees and worship _his_ way right then and there.
The worst example around here is a radio show host whose voice goes up two
octaves when someone differs with him and he then calls them a half-dozen
names, hangs up on them, and beats up on their half-said comments. Well, that
will sure make them want to convert - not!
The really funny part about this guy is that while he drapes himself royally
in the Libertarian banners, even having once run on their ticket, he admits,
in his more honest moments, to being a socialist who one day realized that
Americans were never going to support openly socialist parties or candidates
and decided he could go farther with the Libertarians. It seems his real
motivations are "getting" some groups and organizations - people who make
"too much", companies that aren't "good", etc.
These kind of people have/are doing the Libertarians more damage than their
enemies ever could.
In simple terms: you can't convert people by calling them insulting names,
acting in an enraged manner, and expect them to cast off a lifetime of
mis-education and follow you. The Republicans are left-of-center and look at
how they're characterized as right-wing, genocidal, wacko fascists.
They've been getting beat over the head because they wanted to slow the
growth of social programs and had the audacity to suggest the repeal of the
AW ban. Imagine the reception someone who wants to repeal Social Security,
all gun laws, subsidies, etc. is going to get. _Then_ tell us all how Browne
is going to be the next president.
Of course, I don't think they really care. I have come to the conclusion that
the people ranting here really want Clinton back in so that it can force
things to a head. They have some sort of wish for an all-out confrontation.
Maybe they've seen Star Wars and Red Dawn a few too many times.
It's very likely to backfire on us all. Machiavelli these people ain't...
