As I said, putenv() was in one of the drafts of ISO IEC 9445-1:1993 (although
whether it made it into the final standard I don't know), and is also
documented in the Single UNIX Specification, version 2 on page 672. Since
Jamie Kowinsky is targetting a UNIX platform (HP/UX) and a UNIX-like platform
(linux), warning him off using putenv() is not a very helpful thing to do,
since the basis for your warning isn't really very solid.
