As a new teacher, I got posted to a remote school in NZ's North in 
the '50s - and boarded with a fundamentalist Presbyterian lady. 

Sputnik One was extraordinarily visible at night, buy Mrs Dench 
refused to believe that mere man had put anything up there and was 
unable to accept the evidence of her own eyes - except as 
testimony as to the ability of the Devil and the Communists to 
delude Christians....   the breakfast sermon was always 
interesting.

The sky at night up there was always clear and amazing...
