subject: optical fiber networks

Hiya Bernhard,
On 16-10-97, whilst lying in the gutter of the information super highway, I
heard Bernhard Kuemel whispering to All about optical fiber networks,
BK> I have never heard of or seen optical fiber networks in small
BK> environments where usually something like ethernet is used. Why? Is
BK> it that expensive? I wouldn't think so. And it could be as flexible
Cost primarily. Fibre and the bits to connect are very dear compared to coax
and UTP. It's usually used where distances exceed the 90m Cat5 limit or where
electrical machinery is likely to cause excessive interference.
