Damage I wouldn't worry about.  The larger issue is expense
of connectivity.  Let's see...one card in the server, purchase an Active
Hub, two cards left for workstations.  Now you have two workstations
that can hit the server at the blinding speed of 2.5Mb/s. (alibi, from a
LONG way away)
I think you'll find that Ethernet cards are just to cheap to warrant
playing with those antiques.  That's just MY opinion.
