My company of 45,000 systems is about 90% Windows systems, and Microsoft is
actively engaged in our account. I went to a Windows 8.1 day at their local
office recently, and I can see some benefits to Windows 8.1 over Windows 7 in
the corporate space -- being able to control the start screen panels by group
policy, and to have my CS people have a simple screen with just the required
apps on the start screen for one. The interface bugs me - until they force
everyone to a new system with a touch screen, that is.

...And after all the times I've told my kids NOT to touch the monitor.

What does look impressive are Windows 8 tablets. While an iPad is a nice
consumer device, I'd like to be able to open Office documents, edit them and
interoperate with my laptop/desktop. Or to get people a cheap tablet and a
cheap desktop system and have them use that combo instead of a laptop. The
desktop/tablet combo would be cheaper and easier to maintain, and give people
less to carry around with them!

For home use, Windows 8.1 is a new interface and IMO doesn't offer a huge value
to the consumer over Windows 7. I'm still running 7 at home, however and can't
vouch for that.
