There are a couple of things people can do to continue running Windows XP and
minimize risks.

There's a package out there called LitePC that lets you streamline your XP
installer. Take out most of the stuff from Windows and there's less to exploit.

There are versions of XP out there called MicroXP and TinyXP available as
torrents on the net. The maintainer has taken the majority of Windows
components out and left just the OS and UI bits - including removing IE.
MicroXP runs in 45 megs of RAM and has 30 processes running. You'll need to
determine legality of running one of these versions as they come with a reg
key. You may feel that putting a non-OEM registration key into one of them
would be OK.

My gut feeling is that as long as you're careful about what you add (.net for
example) and have an updated virus scanner you should be safe.

All of this is outside of the reach of ma and pa user; my father has an XP box
and a birthday in May, so we're replacing his system as a present.

Again, I'd hope that Linux could gain some ground - there is a version of
Ubuntu called Lubuntu that runs great on low-end hardware, and Ubuntu has added
cloud features like file storage and music streaming to the core product.

I run Lubuntu on my 10 year old Thinkpad T42 and it has given it a new lease on
life.
