NP> There is also the Memo Mouse. It recognizes the data of all dive
Hi, thanks for your message (quoted above). I have been wondering
how to store dive data on my next vacation, which will probably
be June '97 to Cozumel. On my last trip there, we did 18 dives
for a total of about 12 hours bottom time. When I got home and uploaded
from my Aladin to my PC, I had totals for bottom time and max depth
for all the dives, but only the last 3 dives could be graphed with
DataTrak, since the Aladin can only store 600 time/depth data points
(200 minutes of bottom time). I had thought of buying an older
286 or 386 laptop - they're pretty cheap if you can find one in decent
condition - and using it to hold the daily dive data for everyone
in our group that has a PC compatible dive computer. The trouble
with this idea is that the DataTrak software seems to be really
picky about what kind of serial port chip is installed in the PC.
My old 286 AT, which has an 8840 UART, refuses to connect to my Aladin,
whereas my much newer Pentium computer, with it's 16550 UART, has
no problem. The point is that I fear an older laptop would have the same
kind of problem. Not to mention that a laptop computer would be another
10 pounds of weight to drag through the airports both ways. I dive
a SeaPro model 850 ProTec BCD (it's just an At-Pac with a sturdier
Cordura vest and bladder cover). If you've ever seen an At-Pac,
you know how heavy they are. My BCD weighs about 15 pounds completely
empty, before you put in any lead! This is a lot to carry on a dive
vacation, so the thought of adding a laptop PC is not too good.
So, what about the Memo Mouse? Is this made by Uwatec specifically
as an Aladin accessory, or does it come from a third party vendor?
How much does it cost, and how heavy/bulky is it? Does it have
any kind of display screen, and if not, how can you be certain
your data uplink from the Aladin was successful?
By the way, did you see a posting in this conference a few days
ago from a diver who had a bad experience with a dive resort
on Cayman Brac? I was wondering if this was just a string of bad
luck he had that particular week, or whether the resort in
question is just a lousy, fly-by-night operation? I have met
quite a few divers who have been to the Caymans, and they
all reported good vacations, with only a few minor glitches
of the kind that happen to even the best run operations.
Again, thanks for the info! -Larry Charlot-
