MW> JC> Don't recognize the names Jim. Cliff Stout was the
MW> JC> Test/Production that I knew and first flew in the 727 with
MW> JC> then. Were they at the factory in Washington?

MW>Is that the same Cliff Stout who was the Project Pilot on

I'm sure Murray that it was the same guy. He was bringing the ole
Yellow/Brown Boeing 727-100 test aircraft around and demonstrating it to
everyone. They had not much in the cabin. Few seats, no galleys, low
fuel and a belly full of tires. His demo with me was a landing and
fully stopped within about 2000 ft. I remember the VRef was 109kts with
40 flaps and he hung it on the prop. Rather firm touch down and stood
up on the brakes. Being a rather short guy it took all he had. Of
course they had a tire change after every max/brakes min run landing.
It simply balded the tires. Of course he Speed/Braked it at moment of
TD and I don't think we ever got fully into reverse. This must have
been late 64 or early 65. I remember the thing that totally fascinated
me was the trim wheel rotating. I never got over seeing that as it was
new to me.
I imagine that they drifted around pretty much from Company to Company
in those days. I'm also trying to remember the Production Test Pilot
that checked me out in the DC-9. O yes! it's coming back to me now it
was Dave Weibach (sounds like). I understand that he moved up to lofter
heights with MD and don't know what happened to him but I guess he is
retired. I remember him telling me about the yaw dampeners and giving
me the demo. He told me the story of having the positive 3,000 lbs with
Control Column on the aft stabilizer that was brought on my the problems
with the BAC-111. He also was in charge of the deep stall testing of
the DC-9.
Great flying machines.
