NEW TREATMENT FOR SJOGREN'S SYNDROME (DRY MOUTH)
April 6, 1998
The U.S. Congress has designated April as "Sjogren's Awareness Month,"
which coincides nicely with the release of a new drug, Salagen, which
treats the dry mouth associated with the disease. Sjogren's Syndrome is a
chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that gradually damages the
moisture-producing glands throughout the body, resulting in extreme
dryness. An estimated one million Americans have it, including many CFS
patients.
Salagen (pilocarpine hydrochloride), which is marketed by MGI Pharma, is
intended to treat the overall dry mouth problem, improving patients'
ability to speak, swallow and sleep. The FDA approved the drug in February
and MGI Pharma is now launching a marketing campaign.
