Or could it be that in the log-pulling contests, you've seen stallions and
geldings, while the carriage horses Jean saw were mares?
Lipizzaner mares were once used as carriage horses. I get the impression
from some of the books I've read that they might seem like a different breed,
to an untrained eye that was only used to seeing the stallions....
